What are Permanent Dentures?

Implant dentures

The term “permanent dentures” is deceptive and misleading. As we know, most things in life are not permanent, teeth and dentures alike. Typically, “permanent dentures” are retained by screws or dental cement onto dental implants and are known as “implant dentures.” However, even implant dentures need to be taken out and cleaned, will eventually wear down, break or become discolored, and at some point, need to be replaced.

You should have your mouth and dentures evaluated annually. If there is significant wear, fractures or deterioration of the dentures, new dentures may be needed. We can advise you on the best options for your situation.

In most cases implant dentures will last 10-15 years or more.  Find out more about implant dentures HERE.

What are the advantages of implant-supported dentures over conventional dentures?

Dental implants provide several advantages over other teeth replacement options. In addition to looking and functioning like natural teeth, implant dentures are designed to be long lasting, are more comfortable and stable than conventional dentures, and allow you to retain a more natural biting and chewing capacity.

Additionally, implants can be more esthetic and easier to maintain than conventional dentures. Because implant dentures will replace some of your tooth roots, your bone is better preserved. With conventional dentures, the bone that previously surrounded the tooth roots begins to deteriorate causing a recession of the jawbone. Dental implants integrate with your jawbone, helping to keep the bone healthy and intact.

How will the implants be placed?

Implants, which look like screws or cylinders, are placed into your jaw. Then, over the next four months, the implants and the bone bond together to form anchors for your artificial teeth. During this time, a temporary denture can be worn over the implant sites.

After a short time, you will experience restored confidence in your dentures and in your smile.
