New Dentures: What to Expect

Woman having her teeth worked on

For many people having new dentures can be daunting, especially if this is your first time.  To put your mind at ease here’s a simple run down of what to expect at each appointment, throughout the denture consultation process.

Where Do I Start?

If you’re considering dentures, you already know from your dentist that you don’t have an alternative and must have all your natural teeth extracted.  However, many dentists quote high prices for dentures, and we want you to know in the state of Washington, you have options! This isn’t the case in all states, in fact, denturists are only in about 8 states in the nation. You’re lucky, however, because Washington is one of them – and Berlanga Dentures is here for you!

Once you know you will need dentures, schedule a consultation with us. At this first, free consultation we will review your situation, discuss options (such as adhesive or implant dentures), help you review your insurance coverage, pricing options, as well as financing options if needed. We have three convenient locations to serve you in Tacoma and Puyallup.

This is the perfect opportunity for you to ask any questions that you may have. At the end of this appointment you can book further appointments and begin the next steps when you’re ready.

What Happens Next?

When you’re ready we will schedule your next appointment and begin working with your dentist or oral surgeon. If you don’t have a dentist or oral surgeon, we can make recommendations. They will send us x-rays and all the information we’ll need to start the process. At this appointment we will most likely take impressions, basically a mold of your mouth, and talk about what’s important to you. For example, you may have a gold tooth in your mouth which you’d like replicated in your new dentures.

On the second appointment we will adjust the bite, take measurements and select the color and shade for your dentures. We work one on one with you to customize your dentures.

Next, we will help you contact your surgeon to set up your extraction date, and post op appointment with our team at Berlanga Dentures. Depending on what type of denture you will be getting will determine the next steps.

If you will be getting Immediate Dentures (read more about Immediate Dentures HERE) we will see you immediately following your surgery, which is when we will place the dentures.

If you are getting Implant Dentures (read more about Implant Dentures HERE) your surgeon will place the dentures and we will see you the following day for post op.

In some cases, Immediate or Implant Dentures are not possible due to complications in your mouth. If this is the case, we will have to wait until your mouth is healed before we can place the dentures.

Regardless of what type of denture you choose, we will now become your denture team of experts. We will check on your dentures for 6 months. Each time we see you we will take the denture out, we’ll check the inclusion (your bite), your mid-line (where your teeth align), and for any rubbing or irritation of the gums. We will make all adjustments and provide you with all the information you’ll need for the care of your dentures.

How Do I Maintain and Care for my New Dentures?

After you go home with your new dentures, we will see you regularly for about 6 months to assure the dentures are exactly as you’d hoped. After that we recommend you come see every 6-12 months so we can check on how everything is fitting, look for changes in your mouth, and make any necessary adjustments. If at any time you find your dentures feel different, they break, or you have any reason for concern – We’re here for you! At Berlanga Dentures we want you to be happy and confident in your smile.

We’re the denture experts and we’re here for you!

Dry Mouth: Is It My Dentures?

Saliva in our mouths is something we often take for granted. Saliva also provides critical moisture that allows us to speak clearly, and for denture wearers, lubrication between the denture and oral tissue.

How Dental Implants Can Improve Denture Function

The addition of dental implants can make dentures feel more natural and functional, when compared to dentures worn without any implant anchor. They provide denture-wearers with more confidence and freedom, knowing the dentures will not move.

Dating with Dentures

A common concern among many denture wearers is how to date or start a new relationship. This is a legitimate concern because smiling, laughing, talking, even dining out, can cause anxiety if you wear dentures.
