Some of those factors -- such as your age and sex – you can’t control. However, if you take care of the other factors on the list, the first two become far less detrimental.

Leading Reasons for Tooth Loss

Gum (periodontal) disease is the world’s leading cause for tooth loss.

Men are more likely than women to have their teeth removed, and tooth loss is more common among patients aged 35 and older.

Smoking is also one of the most common causes, even if you are a former smoker.

Nearly 40% of patients who have tooth loss had poor dental care, or even worse, never received any professional dental maintenance or care at all. And alarmingly, only 10-20% get continuing professional dental care after their tooth extraction.

60% of denture wearers said they never or only occasionally brushed their teeth, and only 15% report brushing their teeth at least twice daily.

Tooth Loss and General Health

Many patients also have other health problems.

Nearly one in five denture wearers have type 2 diabetes, more than one in 10 patients have high blood pressure, and there is a higher risk of gum disease in postmenopausal women.

There are also studies that show a strong link between rheumatoid arthritis and tooth loss due to gum disease.
